Dimensions from 14 mm to 20 mm. All pictures are taken with high resolution camera on bone dry material and on different backgrounds in order to depict the opal as realistically as possible.

オパールは水分含有量が3％〜21％の水和形のシリカです。実際、水分の透過性こそが、それを親水性にしている要因です。
オパールは比較的低温で沈積し、ほとんどあらゆる岩の割れ目に生じ得ますが、最もよく見られるのはリモナイト（酸化鉄水鉱物）、砂岩、流紋岩、泥灰岩、玄武岩といった岩種の裂隙です。宝石オパールだけが、内部色の多様な干渉を見せます。
顕微鏡レベルでは、宝石オパールは直径約150〜300nmのシリカ球が六方晶密度充填または立方最密充填の格子を形成しており、これらの秩序だったシリカ球が、オパールの微細構造を通過する光の干渉と回折を生じさせることによって内部色を生み出します。
