Description from the seller
Antique Japanese Kushi & Kogai Hair Ornament Set — Raden Mother-of-Pearl & Gold Maki-e Lacquer, Flower-Shaped Presentation Box
A rare complete set of Japanese hair ornaments presented in its original flower-shaped presentation box, acquired from a private collection in Kyoto, Japan.
This exceptional set consists of three pieces unified by rich raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) and gold maki-e lacquerwork on a deep black ground:
Kushi (hair comb) — decorated with large sculptural raden leaves, gold maki-e cherry blossoms, and layered floral motifs. The combination of carved abalone shell and gold lacquer creates exceptional depth and iridescence.
Kogai (hair pin) — matching raden foliage with gold maki-e accent flowers and leaf motifs.
Kogai (hair pin) — raden chrysanthemum and leaf design on black lacquer ground.
Original flower-shaped fabric-covered presentation box with purple silk border lining. Box retains original maker's seal. Box shows age-appropriate wear; contents in good antique condition.
Dimensions: Kushi 9.5 cm (height), Kogai 16.5 cm (length), Presentation box 22 cm (diameter).
Acquired from a private collection in Kyoto, Japan. Consistent with Meiji—Taisho period production, circa 1900—1920.
Condition: Good condition with age-appropriate wear. Some raden loss to the lower right corner of the kushi. Both kogai intact. Presenting well overall as an antique display set.
