小さな Dan パスポート仮面 – コートジボワール – 木製 (No reserve price)

Small Dan passport mask – Côte d’Ivoire – wood Details Origin: Côte d’Ivoire People: Dan / Yacouba Material: Wood Dimensions: approx. 95 x 60 mm Period: second half of the 20th century, probably 1970s Provenance: Ex private French collection Description A small Dan passport mask from Côte d’Ivoire, carved in wood and distinguished by its refined scarification marks. Miniature masks of this type are often referred to as “passport masks”. Among the Dan and related groups, such small masks could function as personal objects, portable counterparts to larger mask traditions, and signs of identity, protection or affiliation. This example is especially appealing for its compact size and strong facial construction. The face is oval and deeply curved, with narrow slit eyes, a projecting nose, a small modelled mouth and a pronounced chin. Despite its small format, the mask has a strong presence and a very clear sculptural reading. The most distinctive feature is the incised scarification pattern around the eyes and cheeks. These radiating lines give rhythm to the face and emphasize the tension between the smooth rounded forehead and the more expressive lower part of the mask. The wood shows a dark brown patina, with lighter rubbed areas on the high points and small traces of age and handling. The reverse is hollowed, as expected for this type of miniature mask. A charming Dan passport mask, appreciated for its elegant oval form, expressive features, fine scarification marks and old handling patina. Condition Good condition overall, with wear, abrasions, small marks and surface irregularities consistent with age and handling. Dark old patina with lighter rubbed areas. Please refer to the photographs. Included The mask only. No stand included.
