Signed; Hans van Manen - Portrait [signed and numbered edition with original slipcase] - 1986

Hans van Manen – Portrait A highly sought-after first edition of Hans van Manen – Portrait. Published in 1986, signed and numbered. This beautifully produced large-format monograph celebrates the work of one of the world's most influential choreographers through outstanding photography and elegant design. Hans van Manen’s inspiration and mentor was Robert Mapplethorpe, whom he knew personally. In turn, Van Manen became a mentor to the young Erwin Olaf. In 2022 Hans van Manen and Erwin Olaf joined forces for the Dance in Close-Up series, comprising stills and close-ups of van Manen’s choreographies. Van Manen is, like Peter Hujar, regularly mentioned as an important photographer of the male nude. First edition (1986) Original hardcover Complete with original slipcase Large-format illustrated monograph Hand signed and numbered (no. 316 of 500) The first title page has yellow spots (so-called foxing); all other pages have been checked individually and this is the only page with foxing. The second title page shows signs of handling, as does the colophon page at the back of the book. The rest of the pages also show light edge handling marks (see photos). There are some light dents in some of the pages (not possible to photograph) and some small spot. The photos are an integral part of the description; I have tried to make detailed photos of the most noticeable imperfections. However, other pages may also have minor imperfections. Good condition, showing wear consistent with age and use. A wonderful collector's copy increasingly difficult to find in this complete condition.
