Egyptian Grand Tour Funerary Boat Model Large Polychrome Wooden Sculpture Inspired by Ancient Egyptian Funerary Boats Egypt, Luxor Tradition, Late 19th – Early 20th Century An impressive and unusually large carved and painted wooden funerary boat model inspired by the celebrated funerary boats of Ancient Egypt. This remarkable piece was acquired from an antiquarian dealer as a Grand Tour object, produced in Egypt for the European market during the height of Egyptomania between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The model faithfully recalls the wooden funerary boats discovered in Egyptian tombs, particularly those of the Middle Kingdom, which were intended to accompany the deceased on their symbolic voyage to the afterlife. During the Grand Tour era, wealthy European travelers visiting Egypt sought such objects as souvenirs and collectibles, leading Egyptian workshops—especially around Luxor—to create high-quality interpretations of ancient funerary models for export and private collections. This example is distinguished by its exceptional size and elaborate composition. The long vessel is populated by multiple seated rowers holding their paddles, together with additional standing and seated crew members. At the center of the boat is a raised canopy supported by painted columns, sheltering the symbolic coffin platform associated with the funerary journey. The prow and stern are adorned with striking animal-headed figures, creating a powerful and highly decorative silhouette. The hull is richly decorated with traditional Egyptian motifs executed in black, red, green, and ochre pigments. Particularly noteworthy are the painted Eye of Horus (Udjat) symbols visible on the sides of the vessel, emblems of protection, healing, and regeneration. The Ankh, symbol of eternal life, is also prominently represented. These elements reinforce the funerary and spiritual symbolism that inspired the creation of the model. The craftsmanship displays the characteristic interpretation of ancient Egyptian forms that made Grand Tour pieces so desirable among nineteenth-century collectors. Rather than being exact archaeological reproductions, such works combined historical inspiration with decorative appeal, creating objects that captured the fascination of Europe with ancient Egyptian civilization. The sculpture exhibits an attractive aged patina developed over many decades. The wood shows natural aging, minor shrinkage cracks, surface wear, traces of original polychromy, and localized losses consistent with age and use. The weathered appearance contributes significantly to its authenticity and visual charm. Several details, including the painted decoration and the rowers' paddles, remain remarkably well preserved. Because of its substantial dimensions and strong visual presence, the piece would make an outstanding display object in a collection of Grand Tour art, Egyptomania, ethnographic works, or historical decorative arts. Provenance Acquired from an antiquarian dealer and sold as an Egyptian Grand Tour object inspired by Ancient Egyptian funerary boat models. Dimensions Length: 88 cm Height: 48 cm Depth: 25 cm Condition Good overall antique condition. The model presents age-related wear consistent with its age and material, including surface abrasions, minor paint losses, natural shrinkage cracks, and areas of patina accumulation. One horn is missing, while another horn has been reattached with an old repair. Minor restorations and repairs may be present. Despite these imperfections, the piece remains structurally stable and highly decorative. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description and condition report. A rare and highly decorative large-scale Egyptian Grand Tour funerary boat model, combining historical inspiration, craftsmanship, and impressive display presence.
