兜 - Japan - 1850-1900 Edo Period (1600-1868)

Japanese Menpō (Samurai Face Mask) Period: Edo period Material: Nerikawa (hardened leather) Technique: Black lacquer (urushi) Interior: Red lacquer (shu-urushi) Condition: Very good overall condition, with age-appropriate wear and patina This Japanese Edo-period menpō is crafted from nerikawa, traditionally hardened leather, a material widely used in samurai armor for its excellent balance of strength, lightness, and resilience. The surface has been carefully finished with black lacquer, providing both protection and a refined, dignified appearance. The interior is finished in red lacquer, a common and deliberate choice in Japanese armor, valued for its aesthetic impact as well as its symbolic associations with vitality and spiritual protection. The facial expression is restrained yet intimidating, featuring a pronounced nose and a slightly open mouth with gilded teeth. The design emphasizes authority and martial presence without exaggerated or theatrical elements, indicating a piece intended for real use rather than purely ceremonial display. The mask retains its original side apertures for cord attachment (odoshi) and follows the traditional fastening system. It is accompanied by an articulated yodare-kake, also lacquered, composed of tiered plates decorated with woven cords in turquoise-blue tones and subtle gold accents, adding visual depth and elegance. Lacquered nerikawa menpō were particularly favored by samurai who sought effective facial protection without the added weight of iron, making them a practical and respected choice within well-balanced armor sets. An authentic and well-preserved example, reflecting both the functional sophistication and restrained aesthetic of Edo-period samurai armor. It must be taken into account that there may be typical damages such as scratches, nicks, etc., and parts may be restored or changed over time.
