Meditating Buddha Seated
Laos, 17th–18th century
Ethnic work
Bronze with dark patina
H. 20 cm x W 12.5 cm x D 9 cm
Representing a Buddha seated in meditation (Bhumisparsha mudra), the right hand lightly touches the earth as a sign of enlightenment. The body is modeled with sobriety, with rounded shoulders, a high chest, and a stable stance on its throne.
The face with a gentle, meditative smile, almond-shaped closed eyes, and finely curved lips embodies the inner peace of the Buddha. A refined attention to detail despite the very ethnically folkloric appearance of the subject, with some pronounced features such as the nose. Long ears and hair in fine, regular curls, topped with a slender Usnisha flame, symbolize wisdom and spiritual elevation. The folds at the neck, slightly marked, are one of the essential iconographic traits in Buddha representations, symbolizing wisdom, purity, and the physical perfection of the awakened body.
The Buddha is seated on his throne, typical of Lao and Lan Na production. This solid base/throne is sober despite the deformation.
The bronze, aged, shows an irregular patina with brown and greenish reflections, traces of original gold, and mineralization on the surface.
Condition: Good overall condition, with some traces of mineralization and wear. Deformation at the throne.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection
