"Alfred Stieglitz took his first photographs of the artist Georgia O'Keeffe at his gallery '291' in the spring of 1917. His idea of a portrait was not just one photograph but a series of images that would portray many aspects of a person. Beyond physical appearance, Stieglitz's camera explores what is unseen and mysterious in this woman, revealing his own subjective perception of her and at the same time offering a universal perspective on the relationships between all men and women. His Portrait of O'Keeffe, which ultimately comprised more than three hundred photographs taken during a twenty-year period, was and remains revolutionary in its multiplicity, range, and psychological insight. In 1978 The Metropolitan Museum of Art published the first edition of this book, which included fifty-one photographs selected by Georgia O'Keeffe, who wrote a fascinating introduction explaining the origins of these photographs, as well as her reflections on them many years after they were made. In 1883 he turned his attention to photography, which became the major preoccupation of his life. He returned to New York in 1890, joined the Society of Amateur Photographers, became an editor of the American Amateur Photographer, and made his hirst world-famous photographs of New York. In 1897 he founded and edited Camera Notes, becoming the dominant force within the Camera Club. In 1902 he established the in-dependent, innovative Photo-Secession, and founded the superb quarterly camera work, which he published and edited from 1903 to 1917. Its fifty issues recorded the evolution of the avant-garde in photography, painting, sculpture and writing. In 1905 Stieglitz established The Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession at 291 Fifth Avenue, soon to be known as 291.
