Daunian pottery refers to the distinctive ceramic tradition of the Daunians, an ancient Italic people who inhabited the northern part of Apulia in southeastern Italy during the first millennium BCE. Flourishing between the 8th and 3rd centuries BCE, Daunian pottery is best known for its handmade construction, geometric decoration, and use of local clays. Unlike their contemporaries in southern Italy, the Daunians initially resisted the influence of Greek wheel-thrown pottery, retaining an indigenous character in both form and decoration. Typical Daunian vessels include kraters, askoi, and ritual vases with elaborate applications such as horns, figurines, and stylized birds. Decoration was applied using red, brown, or black paint over a light slip, and featured geometric motifs—zigzags, chevrons, spirals, and meanders. Over time, especially from the 5th century BCE onward, Greek influence became more evident, especially in the addition of figurative motifs and the adoption of wheel-throwing techniques. However, even with these outside influences, Daunian ceramics retained a strong local identity.
