Item Description 高岡銅器 Takaoka Copperware Bronze Vase with Marble Patina and 菊 Chrysanthemum Motif A large-scale bronze vase crafted using the traditional techniques of Takaoka Copperware (Takaoka Doki), a designated Japanese National Traditional Craft originating in Toyama Prefecture over 400 years ago. The tradition began in 1611 when the Kaga Domain lord invited master casters to the town of Takaoka, and the craft later became renowned worldwide for its combination of precision casting, hand engraving, and distinctive chemical coloring techniques that give each piece a one-of-a-kind surface. The surface of this vase displays a striking marbled patina shifting between deep red and dark charcoal grey, accented throughout with gold detailing. The coloring shifts dramatically depending on the angle of light and viewing angle, appearing red, near-black, or gold in turn, giving the piece a dynamic, ever-changing presence. A gilt sixteen-petal chrysanthemum motif is worked into the design, adding a formal, refined accent. The base bears the signature "峰雲" (Houun). Given its generous scale, the vase suits an abundant floral arrangement equally well as it stands alone as a striking decorative object.
