マムリ - (Karagat Mamuli) - スンバ族の人 - Indonesia (No reserve price)

Antique Sumbanese Silver Mamuli Pendant (Karagat Type) – West Sumba, Indonesia, c.1880–1930 A fine antique silver Mamuli pendant from West Sumba, Indonesia, attributed to the late 20th century This Mamuli is a decorated (karagat) mamuli featuring stylised bird-head terminals, twisted rope-wire borders, applied scroll ornament, and granulated silver decoration. Bird motifs are characteristic of West Sumbanese metalwork and are associated with status, spiritual protection, and connections between the human and ancestral worlds. The pendant displays an attractive silver-grey patina developed through age and use. Hand-worked construction remains visible throughout, including the applied wirework and granulation. The piece retains its original ethnographic character and has not been aggressively polished. Mamuli are among the most important ceremonial objects of Sumbanese culture and are recognised by their distinctive omega-shaped form, symbolising femininity, fertility, ancestry, and the continuation of family lineage. Historically they were worn by members of the nobility and formed an important part of ceremonial exchanges, particularly belis (bridewealth), where precious objects were exchanged between families during marriage negotiations. Good condition. Structurally intact with no visible losses to the decorative wirework, bird-head terminals, or granulated ornament. Age-related wear, oxidation, and patination consistent with age.
