デンマークの時計を救う - Spareur - Art Deco - Oak - 1930-1940, 1940-1950

This item is an authentic Danish Savings Clock (known in Denmark as a Spareur), dating roughly to the 1930s to 1950s. Rather than just being a regular mantel timepiece, it is a piece of social and banking history. It was designed as a creative financial device to encourage citizens to save money regularly by forcing them to "feed" the clock to keep it functional. Cabinet & Case Architecture Oak Exterior Construction: As seen in photo, the case is constructed from a heavy, rich oak wood with a visible grain pattern. The facade features architectural, vertical grooved pilasters framing the clock dial, complete with elegant hand-carved dentil or beaded molding strips along the upper and lower edges. The Coin Slot: Located on the side of the wooden case is a thin coin entry slot framed by a protective, secured brass escutcheon plate. Historically, these required a specific coin (such as a 1-krone piece) to be inserted periodically to unlock or allow the movement to run. The Bottom Vault Door: The back lower section has a black metal trapdoor secured by a locking slide-rod mechanism. This area served as a locked vault to collect and secure the inserted coins over time until they could be retrieved. Clock Dial & Mechanical Backplate The 24-Hour Dial: The cream-colored clock face features crisp, stylized black Arabic numerals 1 through 12. Directly outside the main numbers, there is an explicit, smaller outer track displaying military/24-hour time notations from 13 up to 24. The face is bordered by an ornate, heavily patterned brass or bronze bezel. Danish Directives: The brass mechanical housing visible from the back is stamped with clear, functional commands in Danish: At the top, a speed regulator slot reads LANGSOMT (Slow) and HURTIGT (Fast). The winding ports are clearly designated with directional arrows reading OPTRÆK (Wind up), indicating which side powers the clock movement (UHRVÆRK) versus the built-in alarm setting (VÆKKER). Alarm Indicator: Nestled right in the center below the winding shafts is a small, integrated sub-dial tracking the alarm setting sequence. Institutional Branding Affixed directly to the back of the wood case is a distinct, rectangular brass identification plaque that reads: "DANSK SPARE-SELSKAB". Founded in 1912, this institution famously distributed these specialty clocks to promote personal thrift, often combining the mechanical savings method directly with mutual life or property insurance policies for working-class families. Condition & Restoration Potential This vintage time capsule arrives with its original components wonderfully intact and present, offering an exceptional foundation for preservation. All of its key historical elements are beautifully preserved—ranging from the original brass winding key and the rear "Dansk Spare-Selskab" branding plaque, to the secure side brass opening designed to accept the coins. Crucially, the exterior's delicate wooden and copper ornaments remain completely intact and undamaged. While the clock's internal mechanical functionality has not been tested and its working condition cannot be guaranteed, its remarkable structural completeness makes it a dream find. It stands as an incredible restoration project for enthusiastic clock smiths, restoration artists, or horology collectors looking to bring a beautifully detailed piece of Scandinavian banking history back to life. Complete Accessories: Having the original brass winding key significantly helps preserve its value. Aesthetic Appeal: The elaborate Nordic Classicist wood carving and the pristine condition of the copper/brass elements make it highly desirable as a purely decorative mantelpiece or conversation starter, even if it never ticks again. The Coin Mechanism: These clocks require historic coins (like old Danish 1-krone pieces) to function. This vintage saving clock serves as an exceptional find for clock restoration projects, custom horological builds, or as a premium source for authentic vintage parts. A look into the mechanism reveals that the gear train appears entirely complete and undamaged, with all the original brass teeth and steel arbors intact rather than stripped or bent.
