希少なデヤク族のカタパルトと神話のトカゲ像 – ボルネオ、 - ボルネオ島 - Indonesia (No reserve price)

Rare Dayak Catapult with Mythical Lizard Figure – Borneo, Indonesia – Field Collected in the 1970s This remarkable and authentic wooden catapult from Borneo is an outstanding example of traditional Dayak craftsmanship. More than a simple hunting implement, it is a finely carved ethnographic object that reflects the close relationship between functionality, spirituality, and artistic expression in the indigenous cultures of the island. The handle is beautifully carved with a stylized lizard-like mythical creature. Throughout Borneo, lizards and dragon-like beings are deeply embedded in Dayak mythology, where they are often regarded as powerful protective spirits associated with the natural world, ancestral forces, and good fortune. Such carvings were not merely decorative but added symbolic and spiritual significance to an everyday object. This piece was field collected in situ in Indonesia during the 1970s, long before the rapid cultural changes that transformed many traditional communities. It has remained in a private collection ever since. The catapult displays an attractive aged patina acquired through years of use and handling. It remains in good, honest condition, showing appropriate wear consistent with its age and traditional use. These signs of age enhance its authenticity and appeal to serious collectors. Today, original Dayak hunting equipment with symbolic carvings has become increasingly difficult to obtain, especially examples with documented field provenance from the 1970s. An excellent opportunity to acquire an authentic and visually striking piece of Bornean tribal art and material culture, combining practical craftsmanship with the rich spiritual traditions of the Dayak people.
