Henry Matthews & Sons Ltd (HE&S) – Sterling Silver Cigarette Case – Birmingham, England – 185,50g – Mid-20th Century

A fine and substantial English sterling silver cigarette case, crafted by the renowned Birmingham silversmith Henry Matthews & Sons Ltd (HE&S).

The case features an elegant engine-turned decoration on both exterior panels, framed by a refined geometric border. The interior retains its original gilt (gold-washed) finish, a desirable feature that provided additional protection against oxidation and enhanced the luxurious character of the piece.

The case is fully hallmarked and bears a complete set of British assay marks:

* Maker’s mark: HE&S (Henry Matthews & Sons Ltd)
* Anchor: Birmingham Assay Office
* Lion Passant: Sterling Silver (.925)
* Date Letter: “O”
* Pattern/Model Number: 58

The hallmarks are clearly struck and present on the interior.

The construction quality is excellent, with a solid hinge, precise closure and substantial silver weight. The case displays the refined workmanship traditionally associated with Birmingham silver production.

Condition:
Very good antique condition. The case shows only light age-related wear and a few tiny surface marks consistent with careful use over time. No significant dents, repairs or structural damage observed. Original gilt interior well preserved. Hinge and closure function correctly.
