ササン朝タバリスタン銀半ディナール銀貨
正面には右向きのササン朝王の上半身像が描かれ、翼をあしらった冠を着けている。胸部は四つの星が並ぶ円形モチーフに framed され、外周には左三日月形の縁取りが等間隔に配置されている。髭と口髭といった典型的なササン朝の特徴が見て取れる。裏面には炎の祭壇と対面する2名の侍者が描かれている。表面には小さな摩耗があるが、時代相応の表情である。
タバリスタンはカスピ海沿岸に位置した古代の地域である。ササン朝の貨幣は、王冠の頭飾りが常に一方に、もう一方には侍者を伴う炎の祭壇が描かれる点で特徴的だった。時が経つにつれて貨幣には大きな変化は見られず、王の顔は人間として描かれ続けたが、侍者はより機械的あるいは装飾的になり、これらの貨幣と同様の様式となった。炎の祭壇はゾロアスター教の象徴であり、西アジアの歴史で初めて信仰された宗教の証である。最初のササン朝の支配者アーダシール1世はこの宗教に深く献身し、貨幣には炎の祭壇を加えた。この貨幣は宗教と政治の両方の見解を広める宣伝媒体として用いられた。
