AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Item Description
This is a charming antique Japanese bronze incense box (koro) in the Takaoka-doki casting tradition, from Toyama Prefecture — one of Japan's most celebrated centers for metal casting since the 17th century. The piece takes the form of a square box with a pyramidal, hip-roof style lid, pierced with four heart-shaped vents arranged in a cross around a delicate floral toggle knob, allowing fragrant smoke to escape while burning incense.
Each of the four side panels is decorated with a raised diamond medallion filled with fine scrolling arabesque (karakusa) motifs, while the lid's border is further adorned with cast floral and scroll ornamentation. The base is finished with a tactile hammered (tsuchime) texture and stands on four small block feet, with a rectangular seal impressed into the underside reading 英仁 Eijin — the mark of the caster or workshop responsible for this piece.
Having been used as a functioning incense burner for many years, the piece carries an authentic, lived-in patina, including some heat-related discoloration and soot residue inside the chamber — the natural result of genuine use rather than a flaw, and part of its character as a well-loved decorative object.
