侍の人形 武者人形(むしゃにんぎょう、Musha ningyō) - 胡粉ペースト、錦織絹、髪、金メッキ金属 - Japan - Taishō period (1912-1926)

A set of two antique samurai dolls 武者人形 (musha ningyô) depicting Emperor Ôjin 応神天皇 and a samurai retainer, both dressed in full armour. Emperor Ôjin is portrayed seated on a separate campaign chair, wearing an elaborate brocade kamishimo 裃 (samurai costume) combined with elements of a golden yoroi (armour). A tall gilded ‘courtier hat’ crowns the carefully arranged hair. At the side rests a long katana with a tiger-skin covered scabbard, and a long black bow, while a quiver filled with arrows is carried on the back. The eyes are inlaid with glass. The bright white skin tone is created using repeated layers of gofun 胡粉, a refined white pigment made from powdered oyster shell. Beside him kneels a samurai retainer. Although slightly less elaborate, this figure also wears a rich silk brocade garment with black armour elements and a black jingasa (soldier’s hat). The figure carries a pair of swords at the side and holds a long red silk banner. The face is modelled with a stronger expression and pinker complexion, reflecting the character of a warrior rather than a noble figure. The set is accompanied by a folding arrow stand fitted with arrows. Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912–1926) Approximate dimensions: Ôjin: Height 48 cm, width 29 cm, depth 32 cm Retainer: Height 49 cm, width 26 cm, depth 18 cm Both figures are in very good original condition, with minimal traces of wear consistent with age. The arrows show some wear. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
