Description from the seller
SAKAIDA Kakiemon, XII – 日本の磁器 香盒
A *kōgō* (incense container) is a vessel used to hold the incense burned in a tea room; despite being small enough to fit in the palm of one's hand, it is a crucial utensil that helps set the atmosphere for the entire tea gathering. In the tea ceremony, it is used during the charcoal-laying procedure (*sumi-temae*) to provide incense to be burned alongside the charcoal; typically, three pieces of incense are placed inside—two are positioned near the charcoal, while the third is shown to the guests for their appreciation.
