ビザンチン期の灰色の陶器製器皿で、内部が空洞の球形本体を持ち、基部はやや尖っている。上部は短く狭い首に立ち上がり、厚い縁がわずかに開いて小さな口を形成する。器の肩には二つの彫り込み溝が装飾として施されている。 本体と口には欠け、へこみ、表面のざらつきといった使用痕が見られる。表面には土っぽい付着物と変色がある。 本体の一側には斜めにへこみがある。口の周囲には欠けがある。
この品は“Greek Fire（ギリシャの炎）”として知られる爆発性液体を入れて手榴弾として使用されたと考えられる。 Greek Fire、別名液体の炎は、ビザンツ帝国の arsenal で最も有名な武器であり、数世紀にわたり外国の侵攻からビザンツ人を守ってきた。 防衛と攻撃の双方で用いられ、ビザンツ帝国の生存にとって重要な役割を果たした。可燃混合物の配合は何世紀にもわたって厳重に秘密にされ、帝国崩壊後には回収不能になった。その正確な組成は今日まで不明のままである。平均サイズと握りの形状から、短距離の戦闘で手投げされた手榴弾と推定されるが、長距離戦や海戦での使用を否定するものではなく、カタパルトで投げられた可能性も高い。
