この大ぶりのスターリングシルバーの指輪には、メデューサを描いた黒曜石のカメオが細かく彫られており、古代ギリシャ神話の中で最も長く知られ、よく認識される像のひとつです。古典的なグランドツアーに触発された replica（レプリカ）で表現され、波形の蛇に囲まれた彼女の険しい face（顔）が描かれており、メデューサを古代から現代に至るまで力強い神話的象徴へと変えた決定的な特徴が示されています。
古代ギリシャの伝説では、メデューサは三大ゴルゴンの一人でした。彼女の視線は見る者を石へ変える力を持つとされ、恐れられつつも崇拝されていました。後の語りでは怪物として見られることが多い一方で、古代世界における重要な護符的役割も果たし、邪悪・不幸・敵対勢力を退けると信じられる保護の象徴として用いられました。その姿はギリシャ・ローマ時代を通じて盾・鎧・コイン・宝飾品・建築装飾などに現れました。
