impressive chunky sterling silver signet ring mounted with a finely engraved natural carnelian intaglio depicting a classical Roman sentinel standing with spear and shield beside a ceremonial altar surmounted by a military trophy. The composition is executed in the enduring tradition of ancient Roman glyptic engraving, capturing themes of military virtue, vigilance and honour that were central to Roman art.
Scenes of armed warriors accompanied by altars and trophies were widely employed throughout Roman antiquity to commemorate victory, duty and devotion to the gods. During the Grand Tour and later Roman Revival period, these celebrated classical subjects were once again carved into gemstones for collectors inspired by the art and archaeology of the ancient world.
The deep translucent orange-red carnelian provides excellent contrast, allowing the crisp engraved details to stand out beautifully. Combined with its substantial sterling silver mounting, this is an attractive wearable piece that will appeal equally to collectors of classical glyptic art, Roman Revival jewellery and ancient history.
