ホライの上に日の出を描いた屏風 - Silk, Paper, 漆塗りの木材、金箔 - Yamaga Seika 山鹿清華 (1885–1981) - Japan - およそ1925年(大正時代)

A striking two-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) by Yamaga Seika 山鹿清華 (1885–1981) with a painting of Sunrise over Hôrai 蓬莱. The composition depicts the legendary Isle of the Immortals, Hôrai 蓬莱, rising dramatically from jagged cobalt-blue peaks beneath a glowing vermilion rising sun. In the foreground, ancient pine trees frame an elegant temple complex nestled amongst the rocky cliffs, while delicate flowering plum blossoms 梅 (ume) peak behind the branches. Executed in Yamaga Seika's distinctive decorative style, the painting combines traditional Japanese and Chinese-inspired motifs with the bold colours and refined design characteristic of early twentieth-century Kyoto painting. Executed in colour and ink on mulberry paper with a gold leaf ground. The painting is enclosed within a narrow black inner border and a wider patterned golden silk brocade border, all set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal corner mounts. Signed Seika 清華 and sealed in the lower left corner. Yamaga Seika 山鹿清華 (1885–1981) was one of the leading figures in twentieth-century Japanese decorative art. A pupil of Nishida Chikuseki 西田竹石 and Kamisaka Sekka 神坂雪佳, he became particularly renowned for his innovative textile and decorative designs, while also producing refined paintings. He co-founded the Shin Kôgei-in 新工芸院 and the Saikôkai 彩壺会 to promote modern decorative arts, and his work received Grand Prizes at the 1925 and 1937 Paris Expositions. Later in his career he served as a juror for Japan's major national exhibitions and was honoured as a Person of Cultural Merit 文化功労者. Period: Japan - circa 1925 (Taishô period) Dimensions: Total width 190 cm (2x 95 cm); Height 170.7 cm. Considering its age, the screen is in very good condition, with only minor wear consistent with age and use on both sides. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition. The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can of course also be displayed as a freestanding piece. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
