エロス（クピド）がイルカに乗る図は、ギリシャ・ローマ美術で一般的なモチーフでした。恋の神としてのエロスは、海と深く結びつく女神アフロディーテ（ヴィーナス）と密接に関連しています。神話によれば、タイタンのウラヌスの切断された性器が海へ落ちた泡から彼女は生まれたとされます。紀元後5世紀の叙事詩『ディオニュシア』を著したラテン詩人ノンヌスは、イルカが海からアフロディーテを塞浦路斯へ運んだと述べています。エロスがイルカに乗る図は、ローマ貨幣（共和政・帝政の双方）やモザイク、フレスコ画にも頻繁に見られます。
