Waterman Dealer Countertop Display Cabinet – c. 1980–1990
This original Waterman countertop display cabinet was produced for use by authorised retailers, allowing the elegant presentation of approximately twenty writing instruments in a boutique or stationery environment.
Its distinctive proportions immediately set it apart from ordinary collector's pen cases. The unusually wide and low profile, combined with the gently inclined glass lid, was clearly conceived for countertop display, enabling customers to view an entire range of pens at once while maintaining direct interaction with the salesperson.
The cabinet is finished in wood with an engraved WATERMAN IDEAL logo, a continuous brass piano hinge and a blue velvet-lined interior with individual pen channels. The construction combines robust wooden side sections with a lighter base, a practical solution commonly adopted for professional retail furniture intended for everyday use.
Although the exact model has not yet been documented in period catalogues, its design, materials and construction are fully consistent with official Waterman dealer display furniture produced during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The cabinet remains in excellent overall condition. The woodwork is exceptionally well preserved, the engraved branding is crisp and clearly visible, and the glass presents very well. The brass hinge shows only a light, attractive patina acquired through age, while the blue velvet interior displays only minor signs of careful professional use.
Measuring approximately 45 cm wide, 19 cm deep and 10 cm high at the rear (5 cm at the front), the cabinet features a distinctive sloping profile designed to provide optimum visibility of approximately twenty writing instruments. Its generous width combined with its remarkably low silhouette makes it an elegant and highly functional countertop display.
An increasingly uncommon surviving piece of Waterman retail memorabilia, suitable both for the display of fine writing instruments and for collectors of advertising and dealer material from major pen manufacturers.
The writing instruments illustrated in one of the photographs are shown solely to demonstrate the cabinet's original intended use and display capacity. They are not included in this lot.
