Ancient Roman oval red jasper intaglio of a standing boar, 1st–2nd century AD, in good condition, measuring approximately 10 x 8.6 x 2.9 mm, acquired in 2024 from an antique market in the Netherlands.

Ancient Roman oval-shaped red jasper intaglio with a finely detailed engraved standing boar to right. The boar is shown with naturalistically anatomical features of the eye, tusk, head, mane, tail and legs.
-> Boar hunting was a popular pastime amongst Romans and was considered to be strengthening for the body and mind.
± 10 x 8,6 x 2,9 mm
Condition: good solid condition. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
-> The boar represented strength and ferocity and was the emblem of the 10th Legion, Legio X Fretensis. The Legion was established by Julius Caesar around 58 BC and was involved in several key military actions, including the Siege of Jerusalem in 70 AD during the First Jewish-Roman War. The boar emblem symbolized bravery and ferocity, traits highly valued in Roman military culture.
