サハラ砂漠では、白色の石製球体に似た物体は、一般的に球状体（スフェロイド）またはボラスであり、2百万年前頃から新石器時代までの石を刻んだ前史時代の artefacts です。多くは石灰岩やクォーツサイトのような明るい岩から成形され、用途は（投射体、投げ用の工具、あるいは石材の端切れ）とされますが、正確な機能は専門家の間で依然として論じられています。
これらの先史球状体の主な特徴
分類：
球形度の程度に応じて、考古学者は三つのカテゴリーに分けます。多面体（角ばっている）、スフェロイド（面取りされた）、ボラス（完全球体）です。
