A striking large ceramic flower vase by renowned Kyoto ceramic artist Shinkai Kanzan (1912–2011), one of the leading figures of modern Kyo-yaki (Kyoto ware) during the Showa and Heisei periods.

This elegant vase features a rounded baluster form decorated with vibrant vertical streams of turquoise blue, ivory, amber, brown, and deep black glazes. The richly textured surface displays a beautiful crackled effect beneath the flowing glazes, creating remarkable depth and luminosity. The harmonious combination of bold color and refined craftsmanship exemplifies Kanzan's distinctive artistic style.

The base bears the artist's impressed mark, and the vase is accompanied by its original signed wooden tomobako (storage box) with protective cloth. Both the vase and box are included in this lot.

The vase is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs observed.

A highly decorative work suitable for collectors of modern Japanese studio ceramics, Kyo-yaki, and important post-war Japanese art pottery.

Artist Profile

Shinkai Kanzan (1912–2011) was one of Kyoto's most celebrated ceramic artists and a leading master of modern Kyo-yaki. Born into the distinguished Seifu Yohei pottery lineage, he studied under Kiyomizu Rokubei V and established an exceptional career spanning more than seven decades.

Following his return from Siberian internment after World War II, Kanzan developed an original style that combined traditional Kyoto ceramic techniques with modern artistic expression. His works are admired for their rich textures, expressive glazes, and refined decorative compositions.

Throughout his career he received numerous prestigious honors, including the Minister of Education Award at the Nitten Exhibition, the Japan Art Academy Prize, and the Order of the Rising Sun. His works are held in major museum collections, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto.
