Author biography:
Joaquín Mir y Trinxet was born in Barcelona in 1873 and died in Vilanova i la Geltrú in 1940. He was a fundamental figure of modern Catalan painting and is regarded as one of the principal Spanish landscape painters of post-impressionism. He developed a very personal language, characterized by the free and intense use of color, luminosity, and the emotional transformation of the landscape. His production focused especially on various locales in Catalonia and Mallorca.
Landscape depicting a view of Blanes Castle, whose construction appears elevated in the center of the composition and surrounded by fields, paths and abundant vegetation. The foreground is articulated by green, blueish, ochre and earthy color masses, crossed by a winding path that visually leads toward the architectural ensemble.
The work is notable for its loose, vigorous and impasted brushwork, by which the artist synthesizes forms without dwelling on meticulous representation. The contrasts between deep greens, blues and warm tones of the castle create depth and an intense luminous vibration. Signed in the lower right corner.
Dark wooden frame, wide and sober in character, composed of stepped moldings and a broad smooth surface slightly chamfered. It presents a narrow inner molding in grayish tone that defines the painting. Signs of age and small wear from the passage of time are evident.
Dimensions:
With frame: 45.5 × 50.5 cm.
Without frame: 25 × 31 cm.
Notes: The work has not been examined outside the frame.
