Bamboo coral beads are a lightweight, semi-precious organic material popular for jewelry making. Naturally creamy-white or gray with distinctive dark, joint-like nodes, they are highly porous and are usually dyed vibrant shades of red, pink, or orange to mimic precious coral.
Key Material Properties Composition: Formed of calcium carbonate branches alternating with gorgonin protein (the dark, jointed rings).
Hardness: Measures about 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, making them relatively soft and easy to drill, carve, or shape.
Porosity: Highly porous, which allows them to take dyes very well, though this also makes them susceptible to absorbing oils and perfumes.
Processing & Bead Making Sourcing & Cutting: Raw branches are harvested from deep-sea bamboo coral, then sliced, shaped, and polished into various bead formats, including round, tube, barrel, and baroque shapes.
Dyeing Techniques: The white coral is frequently dyed using hot oil or water-based dyes. Water dyes usually color only the surface (and sometimes the inside of the bead hole), while hot oil dyes penetrate the entire bead and are color-fast.Spotting Dyes: Because the dye doesn't penetrate the darker, jointed rings, many dyed beads have speckled or distinctly dual-colored appearances if the natural joint is left intact.
Treatment: Coral and Turquoise Howlite are resin Stabilized and dyed.
