First US edition. The first volume of two volume set. Illustrated with portrait frontispieces, full page plates, wood-cuts engravings, and large fold-out map. Published by Charles Scribner's, New York, 1890. Publisher’s original contemporary brown half leather with marbled boards. The spine with raised bands tooled in gilt, compartments with gilt ornaments and lettering, marbled endpapers pages, and all page edges gilt.

Condition
The book is beautifully bound, designed and illustrated. Firm and well-bound copy. External covers showing mild evidence of age or use. Some scuffing to the leather and slight tear to top of the spine. Internally; in very good condition indeed. Old inscription with neat ink on first blank front free endpaper page. Pages are very clean. Stamped on couple pages. The text is fresh and illustrations in very nice condition (Please see pictures).
