Artist Profile Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器) is a traditional Japanese metal craft originating in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. Its history dates back to 1611, when the local lord Maeda Toshinaga invited casters to the area as part of an industrial development policy, giving rise to a casting tradition now more than 400 years old. Takaoka Copperware gained international recognition after being exhibited at the Paris World Exposition, and it has been officially designated a Traditional Craft of Japan by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry since 1975. The craft is known for its refined casting technique combined with finishing methods such as engraving, inlay, and surface coloring, which give each piece its distinctive texture and patina.
