Ancient Roman Clay 印章 - 2 cm (No reserve price)

An exceptional, well-preserved Roman terracotta bulla (document seal). The obverse face features a crisply stamped relief impression pressed from an official signet matrix or ring intaglio. The central motif depicts a distinct figured scene of a chariot and rider (a biga or quadriga scene), which was one of the most powerful, popular, and symbolic motifs in the ancient Roman world. The reverse offers a remarkable glimpse into ancient administrative practices. It displays deeply grooved, parallel structural striations—the direct negative impression left by the rolled papyrus or bound wooden writing tablets it originally secured. On the side flank, a distinct entry channel remains visible where the original fastening twine or cord passed through the wet clay before it was sealed and dried.Historical SignificanceIn the Roman world, clay bullae functioned as an essential security measure and a verified "notarized signature" for contracts, wills, official decrees, and private letters. Packed directly over bound twine, the unbroken stamp assured the recipient that the correspondence had not been altered or compromised in transit. While the organic papyrus documents themselves rarely survive outside desert climates, these hardened terracotta sealings endure as durable records of Roman daily life, commerce, and legal systems.
