Untitled, from the Wakamono series - Go Mishima (三島剛) - Japan
Go Mishima (三島剛, 1924–1988) was a Japanese artist known for his distinctive depictions of powerful masculine figures within postwar Japanese male figurative art.
This untitled work is from Mishima’s 1972 Wakamono (“Young Men”) series. It is an unnumbered photolithograph on cream-toned paper. No separate printing date, edition number or total edition size is stated on the sheet.
Plate signed “三島剛画” in Japanese in the lower-left area. The signature is printed as part of the image and is not hand-signed. No handwritten signature or edition number appears.
The composition depicts a muscular young Japanese man standing with drumsticks in both hands, wearing a headband and traditional undergarment. Bold irezumi-style tattoo designs in blue, green and red decorate his shoulders and arms, contrasting with Mishima’s precise black linework and finely rendered anatomy.
The work reflects Mishima’s characteristic combination of idealised male beauty, traditional Japanese imagery and tattoo culture. Works from the Wakamono series are sought after by collectors of Japanese modern prints, postwar male figurative art and Showa-era graphic culture.
Exact paper type, publisher details, provenance and documentation are unknown. No certificate of authenticity, invoice or catalogue reference is included.
Condition: Good vintage condition, with age-related toning, slight discolouration, minor handling marks and small spots. The reverse also shows light age-related discolouration. Colours remain vivid. Please examine all photographs carefully.
The artwork will be carefully packed with rigid protective materials and shipped with tracking.
Please note that any applicable import duties, taxes, VAT, customs clearance fees and carrier handling charges are the responsibility of the buyer and are not included in the winning bid or shipping cost.
