古代ローマの瓶。透明なガラスから精巧に吹き込まれた器で、胴はふくらんで肩で絞まり、筒状の首へとつながる。口部は外側に開いた折り返し縁を持つ。瓶は凹んだ底の上に安定して置かれる。表面には地衣・沈着物がついている。大きな欠片が欠け、全体にいくつかの小さな欠けが見られる。欠けの周囲に亀裂がある。土で満たされている。
ガラスは多孔性でないため、高価な油、香水、薬の保管材料としてしばしば好まれた。小さな胴と口は、使用者が液体を慎重に注ぎ、供する量を制御できるようにした。紀元後1世紀にはガラス吹きの技法がガラス製作の技を革新した。新技法により、器ごとに少量のガラスで済ませ、壁をはるかに薄く作ることが可能となり、薬用・香炉・香水の小型容器を新しい形で作り出せるようになった。これらの小さなガラス瓶はヘレニズム期・ローマ時代の遺跡で頻繁に見つかり、特に墓地でよく見られる。瓶に満たされていた液体は、広大なローマ帝国の各地から集められたものだろう。
