The composition is centred around the Crucifixion of Christ, with the figure of Jesus mounted beneath an INRI plaque. At the foot of the Cross are figures representing the Virgin Mary and Saint John. Surrounding the central Crucifix are fourteen individually decorated relief plaques depicting the traditional Stations of the Cross, or Via Crucis. The altar also incorporates two candle holders and a small devotional font/bowl with glass insert. Across the front of the base is the Latin inscription: “DOMINE FIAT VOLUNTAS TUA” meaning: “Lord, Thy will be done.” The complete devotional arrangement makes this considerably more elaborate than a conventional household crucifix and reflects the tradition of private Catholic home altars used for prayer and devotion.
