A Rare and Exquisite Foliated Qingbai Bowl with Molded Plum Blossom Pattern, Southern Song (1127-1279), China Height 4.4 cm / Diameter 11.4 cm Includes a collector's box A finely potted qingbai bowl dating to the Southern Song dynasty, 12th–13th century. The bowl is delicately formed with rounded sides rising from a short spreading foot to an elegant foliated rim, the exterior subtly articulated to correspond with the lobed form. The interior is covered with a translucent pale bluish-white qingbai glaze and decorated in molded relief. A plum blossom occupies the centre of the well, surrounded by further floral and scrolling motifs arranged around the cavetto. The decoration is softly defined beneath the glaze, creating the restrained and refined effect characteristic of Southern Song qingbai wares. Particularly attractive is the luminous glaze, displaying a soft icy bluish tone that pools gently in the recessed areas of the molded decoration. The combination of the foliated form, delicate floral ornament and cool translucent glaze gives the bowl an especially graceful appearance.
