Célestine はラテン語の「coelestis（天の、天体の）」に由来します。より一般には「天青色（ブルー・スカイ）」と訳されます。発見から間もなくの1789年、ドイツの鉱物学者アブラハム・ゴットロブ・ヴェルナーがこの結晶をそのように命名しました。光を帯びた空のような輝きが、まるで天を揺さぶる光に満ちた空を思わせます。
その色は非常に柔らかく、「天使の石」と呼ばれることがあります。伝説によれば、天使たちの清らかで催眠的な歌声から生まれたとされています。また、人類の精神的な揺籃とされるプレアデス座とも結び付けられています。
同義語としては、セレスタイト、クリフトン石（cliftonite）、ジオキシン石（dioxynite）、シチリア石（sicilianite）、さらには硫酸塩化ストロンチウムなどが挙げられます。
