Val Saint Lambert, Herbatte - 花瓶 - ユニークカラー - Uranium glass, Opaline glass - ベル・エポック

Val Saint-Lambert – Herbatte Art Nouveau Uranium & Opaline Glass Bud Vase, c. 1900 An exceptionally rare Art Nouveau bud vase, produced at the Herbatte glassworks under the direction of Val Saint-Lambert in the first third of the 20th century. Standing an impressive 35 cm tall, the vase has an extraordinarily elegant, elongated silhouette with a slender ribbed body flowing into a sculptural quadrangular base. Particularly remarkable is its unusual glass: transparent uranium glass combined with opaline glass, creating a delicate turquoise-green colour and a spectacular vivid fluorescence under UV light. The model is documented in the specialist publication Verreries et Cristalleries Namuroises du XVIIIe siècle à nos jours, prepared by museum specialists Norbert Bastin and Jacques Toussaint, where it is attributed to Val Saint-Lambert – Herbatte. Val Saint-Lambert had been present at the Herbatte glassworks from 1879, making this vase an important piece of Belgian glassmaking history. Its rare turquoise uranium colour, sculptural Art Nouveau form and documented provenance make this a true collector’s piece of museum interest. Uranium glass of this type is no longer produced, adding further appeal to surviving historical examples. Originally conceived as a single-flower or bud vase, its remarkably pure silhouette also makes it strikingly contemporary — perfect in a modern interior with a single flower or decorative branch. The vase is in very good condition, especially considering its age, with only a small defect to the rim, clearly visible in the photographs. A genuine find for the serious collector of Belgian Art Nouveau and uranium glass. Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks. The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp. The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics. Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation. Will be well packaged, protected and insured
