Description from the seller
Byzantine. Ca. 600–850 AD.
Bronze, 20-22 mm, 2.2-7.3 g.
Item details:
— 20 mm / 6.36 g
— 20 mm / 7.3 g
— 22 mm / 2.2 g
Reference: Wilson, “On Early Thimbles,” Oxford Journal of Archaeology 35.4 (2016), 413–432.
Byzantine thimbles were practical tools of textile production, protecting the finger while pushing fine needles through cloth. Copper-alloy examples appear securely in Mediterranean contexts from the late 6th century onward, perhaps connected with increasingly sophisticated textile and silk production. Their punched surfaces provided grip and offer a direct glimpse into everyday craft and domestic life in the Byzantine world.
Provenance: Bought in December 2024 at a German auction house; the catalogue recorded private-collection consignment. Purchase invoices on file.
