ドライバーズ・チャンピオンシップでは、マクラーレンの同僚アルイン・プロストとニキ・ラウダがシーズンを通じて熾烈なデュエルを繰り広げた。プロストは7勝を挙げて1963年のジム・クラークの記録に並び、ラウダの5勝を上回ったが、最終的には半ポイント差でラウダが勝利した。これはF1史上最小の差である。
