Italian Capodimonte-Style Porcelain Table Lamp – Crowned N Mark – Hollywood Regency – c. 1960

Decorative Italian porcelain table lamp from the mid-20th century, most likely dating from the 1960s, executed in the Rococo Revival tradition associated with Italian Capodimonte-style decorative porcelain and the Hollywood Regency interior aesthetic.

Dimensions: Approx. H 42 × W 27 × D 14 cm

The substantial white glazed porcelain body has an elegant baluster/urn form and is richly decorated with raised rocaille and foliate relief, extensively highlighted in gold.

Of particular quality are the large polychrome floral reserves on both principal sides of the lamp, depicting finely executed bouquets of roses and other flowers within gilt oval surrounds. The combination of sculptural relief, gilding and colourful floral decoration creates a particularly elaborate appearance when viewed from either side.

The lamp retains its highly decorative period textile shade, an important part of its overall presentation.
The shade is constructed with cream-coloured pleated/radiating textile panels, lace sections and elaborate metallic passementerie, including decorative trim and central appliqué ornaments.
When illuminated, the radiating textile construction produces a particularly attractive warm effect.

Marks and attribution
The underside retains several original markings.

Most importantly, there is a dark hand-applied mark resembling the crowned-N type traditionally associated with Italian/Neapolitan Capodimonte porcelain production, together with additional hand-painted workshop/decorator markings.

A further hand-painted number appears to read “375”. This may represent a factory form, model or decoration number; however, its precise significance has not been established.

The lamp also retains an old Selecta label numbered 1631, incorporating the historic Norwegian N electrical approval mark, indicating that the electrical assembly was approved/imported for the Norwegian market.

The exact Italian ceramic workshop has not been conclusively identified. For this reason the lamp is conservatively described as Italian Capodimonte-style / Capodimonte-tradition porcelain rather than attributed to a specific Capodimonte manufacturer.
This distinction is important, as crowned-N variants were used by several Italian porcelain workshops during the 20th century.

Dating and style
The construction, decoration, electrical fittings and overall design are consistent with Italian decorative lighting of approximately 1955–1970, most probably the 1960s.

Its combination of white porcelain, extensive gilding, elaborate Rococo-inspired relief decoration and luxurious textile shade also places it naturally within the Hollywood Regency aesthetic popular internationally during this period.

The lamp therefore works equally well as an example of Italian Rococo Revival decorative porcelain and as a statement piece for a Hollywood Regency interior.
Condition

The lamp is in good vintage condition considering its age.
The porcelain body presents very well, retaining its colourful floral decoration and extensive gilding.
There are normal minor signs of age and use consistent with a decorative object approximately sixty years old.
The period textile/lace shade shows age-related wear, including a small tear/opening in the lace at the upper section, clearly visible in the photographs.
This has deliberately been left unrestored in order to preserve the shade in its present vintage and possibly original condition.

The lamp has been tested and is currently in working condition.

As with all vintage electrical lighting, inspection by a qualified electrician is recommended before prolonged use, particularly when used in a country with different electrical standards.

Provenance / historical details
The surviving Selecta/N approval label is an interesting indication that the Italian lamp was historically prepared or approved for use on the Norwegian market.
Together with the original workshop markings and period shade, these surviving details contribute to the lamp's authentic mid-century character.

A highly decorative and increasingly difficult-to-find example of mid-century Italian porcelain lighting, combining Italian Rococo Revival ornamentation with the glamorous decorative character now associated with Hollywood Regency interiors.
