真鍮製アンティーク海上望遠鏡。彫刻:Watchet Harbour 1887 & Aronsberg Liverpool、長さ1.1m、海事用 - 1850-1900

Antique Brass Marine Telescope Inscribed Watchet Harbour 1887 & Aronsberg Liverpool, 1.1m Maritime Spyglass. A genuine piece of Victorian maritime history, a magnificent large brass telescope, inscribed "Watchet Harbour 1887" and the makers name, the renowned "Aronsberg Liverpool". Measuring an impressive 1.1 meters (approx. 43 inches) when extended, this heavy, long-range telescope was historically deployed for coastal scanning and port monitoring at the historic port of Watchet in Somerset. Crafted from heavy polished brass with rich age-related character, dents, and a warm untouched patina, it serves as a stunning statement decor piece for a study, coastal home, or nautical collection. The telescope produces an inverted image, this was intentional, many mid-to-late 19th-century trade and commercial optical makers built long terrestrial telescopes using simpler internal lens arrangements to maximise image brightness and clarity over long distances. Large multi-draw or single-draw brass telescopes spanning around 1 meter to 1.5 meters long were standard-issue for harbours, coastguard stations, and naval lookouts. They needed a long focal length and a substantial objective lens to gather maximum light over open water. While smaller spyglasses could easily be held to the eye freehand, a heavy 1.1m telescope was typically rested on a deck rail, a harbour wall, or mounted on a small portable brass tripod/clamping stand to keep the distant image steady.Harbour officials, customs officers, or lookouts scanning Watchet Harbour in 1887 routinely used these powerful long-range scopes, accepting an upside-down field of view as a normal trade-off for a sharp, bright horizon view. Era: Victorian, Dated 1887 Maker: M. Aronsberg & Co., Liverpool Provenance: Inscribed to Watchet Harbour Length: Approx. 1.1m extended Condition: Authentic antique condition with surface wear, character dings, and a gorgeous vintage brass glow. Optics reflect its historic construction. It has a focussing dial in working order and two screw holes in the base for use with a tripod. M. Aronsberg & Co. was a well-known 19th-century firm of opticians and instrument makers based in Liverpool, operating heavily through the 1860s to the late 1880s. They manufactured and imported a wide range of optical goods, including field glasses, spectacles, barometers, and portable spyglasses/deck telescopes for maritime and land use. Watchet is a historic harbour town in Somerset, England. The inscription we see here indicates that the telescope was issued to, owned by, or officially used at Watchet Harbour around 1887 by harbour masters, customs officials, or coastguards. Harbours, port authorities, and naval officers relied on portable spyglasses to spot incoming ships, monitor coastal weather, and manage port traffic.
