Medieval, Crusaders Era Bronze 「聖なる八端の十字架」— 60cmの銀チェーン付きの身につけられる十字架 (No reserve price)

A distinctive and highly sculptural Medieval bronze cross pendant, attributed to the Crusader era, characterized by its unusual openwork construction and prominent rounded terminals. The cross is built around a strong central axis with a pronounced central boss. Its arms divide into elegant curved branches terminating in rounded, almost globular ends, creating a striking symmetrical composition. The upper section forms a smaller secondary cross, while the lower branches divide outward, giving the entire pendant an elaborate, almost architectural silhouette. The multiple rounded terminals are particularly eye-catching. In medieval Christian metalwork, expanded and rounded cross terminals were often used to emphasize the sacred extremities of the cross. Here, their repetition gives the object a rhythmic appearance and may have enhanced its visual and protective character when worn. The open spaces between the arms make the cross appear surprisingly light and dynamic, while the heavy three-dimensional modelling gives it a powerful presence. Its handmade irregularities and aged bronze surface contribute greatly to its character. The cross was one of the most important personal devotional symbols of the medieval Christian world, representing Christ's sacrifice, salvation, faith and divine protection. Objects of this type could be worn close to the body as visible expressions of Christian identity and devotion. The bronze retains an attractive dark brown surface with areas of green patination and warmer exposed highlights, beautifully emphasizing the rounded terminals and sculptural construction. Culture/Period: Medieval / Crusader Era, attributed Date: Approximately 11th–13th century AD, attribution Object: Wearable devotional cross / pendant Material: Bronze Design: Openwork cross with central boss, bifurcated arms and multiple rounded terminals Condition: Age-related wear and patination; strong sculptural form preserved. Please refer carefully to the photographs. Presentation: Presented on a modern silver chain for wearable display; the chain is not ancient. A particularly charismatic medieval-style cross — bold, symmetrical and almost jewel-like in its construction, transforming one of Christianity's most enduring symbols into a remarkable wearable object.
