The idea of ​​rewriting Wilhelm Müller's texts from Franz Schubert's famous song cycle "Winterreise" originated from a suggestion made by the Styrian Autumn Festival.

Gerhard Rühm solved this task in a startling and original way, ultimately opting for a strict phonetic reference method that preserves the entire vowel structure of Wilhelm Müller's poems and retains as much of the consonant structure as possible. The resulting soundscape of the poems, created from new word and sentence combinations, signals a "hallucinatory layer of meaning that seems to lie behind, namely behind, the original words, and simultaneously counteracts them."

Gerhard Rühm's photo collages, created specifically for this cycle, underscore and complement this linguistic journey, whose unconscious content oscillates between unsettling directness and dreamlike symbolism.
