Item Description
This is a hand-thrown flower vase (hanaire) by Yamazaki Mitsuhiro, a Kyo-yaki / Kiyomizu-yaki ceramic artist working at the Kōyō Kiln in Kyoto. The vase has a shouldered, well-balanced silhouette that tapers gently toward the foot, finished overall in a translucent jade-green celadon glaze with a fine, even crackle texture. The unglazed footring reveals the pale stoneware body beneath the glaze, and the artist's mark is impressed on the base.

Free of surface pattern, the vase suits both Japanese and Western floral arrangements alike, making it a versatile piece for ikebana or casual display.

The vase has been kept in a display cabinet and has not been used to hold water or fresh flowers. No chips, cracks, or stains were noted on inspection; a slight variation in the perceived tone of the celadon glaze under different lighting is a natural characteristic of the glaze rather than an inconsistency, as the color is uniform overall.

Artist Profile
Yamazaki Mitsuhiro (山崎光洋 Yamazaki Mitsuhiro, b. 1962) is a Kyoto ceramic artist working at the Kōyō Kiln (光洋窯) on Gojōzaka, Kyoto, as the eldest son of ceramicist Yamazaki Akira, second-generation head of the kiln. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts (sculpture) at Osaka University of Arts and studied under Japan Art Academy member Kawai Seitoku. In 1989 he debuted simultaneously at the Nihon Shin-Kōgei Exhibition, the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition), and the Kyōten (Kyoto Art Exhibition). He became a member of the Kyoto Craft and Fine Arts Artists Association in 1992 and of the Nihon Shin-Kōgei Federation in 1994, later serving as a juror for the Nihon Shin-Kōgei Exhibition and as a board member of its federation. His solo exhibitions have been held repeatedly at the Daimaru Kyoto art salon, and his work was selected for the 2001 "Kyoto Crafts in Edinburgh" exhibition at the City Art Centre, Edinburgh. He is known for celadon-glazed stoneware in the Kyo-yaki / Kiyomizu-yaki tradition.
