Description from the seller
Ancient Roman Lead Tessera Depicting Helios (Sol) – Very Rare
Roman Imperial Period, circa 2nd–4th Century AD
Material: Lead
Weight: 4.6 g
Dimensions: 16.3 × 16.6 × 5.5 mm
From a Private European Collection.
A fascinating and very rare Ancient Roman lead tessera featuring a beautifully modelled, high-relief portrait traditionally identified as Helios (Sol), the ancient personification of the Sun and one of the most powerful divine symbols of the classical world.
An Exceptional Miniature Portrait:
Despite measuring only approximately 16 mm, this remarkable ancient object displays an impressively sculptural representation of a youthful male head, turned slightly to the left.
The pronounced facial features, deeply recessed eyes, carefully shaped nose and prominent rounded chin create a striking three-dimensional appearance. Particularly attractive is the treatment of the surrounding hair, arranged in flowing, individually distinguishable locks.
The portrait rises prominently from the surface, giving this miniature object an almost sculptural character.
Its beautifully preserved sandy earthen patina, combined with darker areas of ancient surface oxidation, enhances the relief and lends the piece an especially appealing archaeological appearance.
The reverse is undecorated, retaining its characteristic ancient surface.
Helios (Sol) – The Divine Power of the Sun:
In Greek mythology, Helios personified the Sun itself, travelling across the heavens in his radiant chariot and illuminating the world below.
The Romans identified Helios with Sol, whose importance grew considerably during the Imperial Period.
The Sun represented divine illumination, cosmic order, eternal renewal and the triumph of light over darkness.
Under Emperor Aurelian (AD 270–275), the cult of Sol Invictus, the Unconquered Sun, received particularly prominent imperial patronage. Solar imagery consequently became closely associated with Roman authority, victory and the enduring power of the Empire.
The portrait on this tessera evokes this fascinating religious and cultural tradition, linking a remarkably small surviving object to one of the most enduring divine concepts of antiquity.
Tesserae – Small Objects with Remarkable Histories:
Lead tesserae occupied an intriguing place in everyday Roman life.
These miniature objects could function as tokens associated with admission, distribution, identification or other administrative and social activities.
Their imagery frequently drew upon the rich visual language of Roman religion, mythology and imperial culture.
The present specimen is particularly appealing for its pronounced sculptural relief and expressive portrait, transforming a modest lead object into a miniature work of ancient craftsmanship.
A Fascinating Survivor from Roman Antiquity:
The combination of its beautifully modelled divine portrait, substantial three-dimensional relief, compact dimensions and attractive ancient patina makes this an especially desirable object for collectors of Roman tesserae, ancient religious iconography and miniature antiquities.
A very rare and exceptionally appealing Ancient Roman lead tessera – a remarkable miniature portrait reflecting the artistic and religious traditions of the Roman world.
