カイアナイト（別名サファライト、ディスサン、サパリット）は、鉱物群「珪酸塩・酸化物」に属する鉱物です。化学組成は Al2[O|SiO4] で、化学的にはアルミニウム珪酸塩にあたります。結晶構造的には孤立珪酸塊さんに属します。
カイアナイトは主にプリズム状から板状の結晶を、ガラスのような光沢を持つ表面で発達させますが、繊維状・粒状から塊状の鉱物集合体として現れることもあります。純粋な状態では無色透明です。しかし、格子欠陥や多結晶性による複屈折の影響で白く見えることがあり、微量元素の混入により淡青〜深青、青紫、緑がかった色調から茶色がかった色まで幅広く変化し、透明度はそれに伴って低下します。
