馬具の図案をあしらった印籠、根付と締玉付き - 漆、木材、ガラス - Japan - Edo Period (1600-1868)

A Japanese four-case lacquer inro decorated with horse trappings (bagu), complete with a lacquer netsuke and a glass ojime. The inro has a ground of densely sprinkled gold flakes (nashiji). Across this ground, stirrups (abumi) and saddle flaps are worked in raised lacquer (takamaki-e) and arranged diagonally across all cases. The design continues over the top and sides. Some of the trappings have finely textured surfaces that imitate leather or fabric, with small gold floral details. Horse equipment was a favoured subject in Edo-period lacquer, connected with the samurai class. The netsuke is a cylindrical lacquered wood piece made as a small lidded container. It is decorated with flowers and leaves in red and gold lacquer, and a chrysanthemum is carved on one end. The ojime is a fluted clear glass bead, and the set is strung on a blue cotton cord. Inro: Lacquer on wood, four cases and lid, unsigned. H 10.2 cm x W 6.5 cm x D 2.8 cm. Netsuke: Lacquered wood, cylindrical container form, floral design. Ojime: Fluted glass bead. Period: Estimated late Edo period (19th century), based on technique, style and wear. The netsuke and ojime are likely associated with the inro. Condition: Used condition with considerable age-related wear. Chips and lacquer loss along the edges of the cases, especially at the lower corners. Fine cracks along the case rims, and wear to the raised lacquer and gold ground. The netsuke shows lacquer loss, with the wood visible in places. The cord is faded. Please see the photos, which form part of the description. Provenance: From a private collection in Kyoto, Japan.
