Ancient Chinese 青花磁器 鳳凰の鳥が描かれた Tek Sing 皿 (No reserve price)

A very fine blue and white porcelain plate from the Tek Sing shipwreck featuring a blue-glaze phoenix bird decoration in the centre of the plate. The object is formed of a shallow bowl, with gently curving walls without a folded rim. The base of the plate is supported on a narrow, circular foot-ring. The centre of the plate is decorated with blue-glaze painted motifs, including a central phoenix bird, a margin delineating the well and rim of the plate, and three scroll motifs within this margin. The plate is in good condition, with a minor chip to the rim. Some discolouration might be visible on some parts of the plate due to age and seawater exposure. The official Tek Sing Treasures sticker and previous owner's stickers visible to the base. The Tek Sing (which means “True Star” in Chinese) was a large Chinese junk, which sank on 6th February 1822 in an area of the South China Sea, known as the “Belvidere Shoals”. Undertaking its attempted journey from Amoy to Jakarta were 1600 emigrants and an enormous cargo, which included silks, spices, and 350,000 pieces of Chinese porcelain. Indeed, some of the cargo was even strapped to the ship’s hull, but its tight packing allowed it to become the largest cargo of Chinese porcelain ever to be salvaged from a wreck. Measurements: (circa) W 17.8cm x H 3cm Provenance: From the 1822 Tek Sing shipwreck that was discovered by Michael Hatcher in 1999.
