Two Japanese copper tea ceremony ornaments, an articulated praying mantis and a black spider set, with lid-rest function, dating to 1900–2000 and stamped Amamiya Sō, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Item Description
This is a set of two Japanese copper insect ornaments made for the tea ceremony: a praying mantis and a black spider. The mantis is finely modelled, with ridged forelegs, segmented abdomen detail, and veined wings that are articulated. It carries a stamped mark on the underside and is attributed to 雨宮宗 Amamiya Sō. The spider is a smaller piece with slender, angular legs and a dark patina. It is listed as a tea ceremony and incense utensil, and can serve as a lid rest (futaoki) or as a small display object. Together they make a compact pair of insect studies in copper.
Artist Profile
Amamiya Sō is associated with the Kinjūdō (金寿堂) workshop, which produced tea ceremony utensils, including iron kettles (tetsubin). Its work circulated widely from the Meiji through the Shōwa periods, both in Japan and abroad. Within Kinjūdō, Amamiya Sō is regarded as a leading master, known for refined gold and silver inlay on iron kettles. A kettle bearing his mark is documented as made in 1915 (Taishō 4) on commission from the Imperial Household Ministry. His mark also appears on fine copper decorative objects, including articulated insects such as mantises, beetles and centipedes, used as tea ceremony ornaments. His works are sought after by collectors in Japan and internationally.
